DIGITAL ASSETS HAVE COME A LONG WAY

RESEARCH UPDATE21 MAY 2026 · NCA.ORG
Published crypto ownership report

67 million Americans now hold crypto.

A new report on U.S. crypto ownership, based on research with The Harris Poll.

Source: NCA / The Harris Poll, 2026. Estimate includes all crypto assets.

The days of dismissing digital assets as a fad are over.

BlackRock has a Bitcoin fund. The U.S. government has established a Bitcoin reserve.

And millions of Americans now own some crypto.

But look at how differently people handle it compared with their other investments.

You wouldn’t buy a property without looking at the numbers.

You wouldn’t put a big chunk of your savings into a stock just because someone mentioned it in a video.

With crypto, it can be much harder to find research and people you trust.

You might already have a substantial amount in Bitcoin and other coins.

You follow the market, you care about how it performs, and you’d like to keep growing it.

But who’s helping you look into those investments?

With property or stocks, you might have a financial adviser, a specialist or research you trust.

With crypto, you’re often trying to work it all out yourself.

YOU BELIEVE IN THE MARKET

You’d invest more in digital assets if you had the conviction to do it.

You’ve got capital. You believe there’s money to be made in this market.

But before you commit more, you want to understand the investments properly.

You want the same confidence in those decisions that you have with the rest of your portfolio.

Maybe you’ve bought altcoins before and got burned.

Or you watched your account go up last cycle, kept waiting for more, and gave most of it back.

So now you hesitate. You see another opportunity, but you’re thinking, “Am I about to make the same mistake again?”

You want to be able to look into an investment yourself and decide whether it deserves your money.

That means knowing why you’re buying, how much of your portfolio you want in it, and what would make you take profits.

You don’t want to keep relying on a friend’s tip or an influencer telling you what to buy next.

BEYOND BUYING AND HOLDING

There are more ways to make money in crypto than waiting for Bitcoin to go up.

You’ve probably seen other investors getting into coins earlier or earning income on money they already hold.

You’d like to understand how they do it.

These are three areas we want you to get familiar with.

01

Earn passive yield on crypto you hold.

USDC lending illustration with historical example APYs of 6.48% and 12.58%, including incentive rewards.
Example APYs, including token incentives. Pendle: 5.50% base + 0.98% rewards. RockawayX: 4.62% base + 7.96% rewards, using confidential USDC.Source: Morpho, 15 October 2026. Variable annualised rates, not guaranteed returns. Capital is at risk.

Your USDC doesn’t have to sit there doing nothing while you decide what to buy next.

There are USDC-based lending opportunities quoting around 6% to 12% annualised yield, including incentive rewards. You supply funds that borrowers use, rather than relying on a coin’s price going up.

The number is only part of what you need to understand. Where does the income come from? How much is paid in extra tokens? Can you withdraw when you need the money?

That’s what we want you to learn: how to research passive yield before putting your idle capital into it.

02

Research investments beyond Bitcoin.

Research the business behind the token
Look at customers, fees and how the token benefits. A token is not automatically a share in the business.

There are crypto businesses with paying customers.

Trading platforms. Lending markets. Services other businesses use.

Take Hyperliquid. People trade on its platform and pay fees.

You can look at how much it’s being used, how those fees work and how the HYPE token fits into the business.

That gives you something to investigate before buying.

Is it growing? Does the token benefit?

Is the price already assuming everything goes right?

Owning a token isn’t automatically the same as owning shares in the business.

21SHARES RESEARCH 20 AUGUST 2026

Hyperliquid generated $419.3 million in fees in six months.

$419.3mGross fees · January to June 2026

21Shares reported a 31% increase in gross fees compared with the first half of 2025. Core protocol revenue fell 3.8% over the same period.

Source: 21Shares’ analysis of Hyperliquid’s H1 2026 results. Fees are not profit or returns earned by HYPE holders.

These are the numbers you can start investigating. Who’s using it? What are they paying for? And how does any of that benefit the token you’re thinking of buying?

03

Look into early-stage coins before they’re household names.

Find it. Research it. Then decide.
Look into emerging projects before they’re widely known. Early-stage investments can fail.

By the time a coin is all over YouTube, you’re usually hearing about a move that has already happened.

Native markets let you research and access some coins directly on the blockchain, before they reach the big exchanges.

It’s where you can look for emerging projects instead of only choosing from the names you already recognise.

But early doesn’t automatically mean good.

You need to check the business, who holds the tokens and whether you could actually sell your position.

Smaller projects can fail, and getting your money back out can be difficult.

The next question is how much of your portfolio belongs in each of these.

How much stays in Bitcoin? How much could go into other coins?

What money do you want available, and could any of it earn yield?

That’s a different conversation from “Which coin should I buy?” And it’s the one you want to have before you invest more.

THE FOUR-YEAR CYCLE

You don’t want to spend another bull run wishing you’d worked this out sooner.

You’ve heard people talk about crypto’s four-year cycle.

Bitcoin’s halving happens roughly every four years, cutting the new Bitcoin paid to miners.

Past cycles have included long quiet stretches followed by powerful rallies.

That’s why investors compare today’s chart with earlier cycles.

They’re looking for signs of a recovery before it becomes obvious in the headlines.

Look at the dates on the charts below.

Compare what happened then with what we can actually see today.

THEN, WHAT FOLLOWED, AND NOW

Look at the recovery. Then look at what followed.

Start with January 2023, before comparing it with today.
1. The setup in January 2023AUG 2022 - JAN 2023
Bitcoin chart: November 2022 to early January 2023 consolidation circled and labelled Bottom; January 2023 rise circled and labelled Recovery.
2. What happened after thatJAN 2023 - DEC 2024
Actual Bitcoin prices in 2023 and 2024. A small circle marks the initial recovery; a short pointer identifies the subsequent bull market.

Bitcoin started 2023 near $16,600 and ended 2024 near $93,400. The chart includes the falls along the way.

3. The recovery we’re watching nowAPR - 14 OCT 2026
Bitcoin chart: June to early August 2026 consolidation circled and labelled Bottom; subsequent recovery through October circled and labelled Recovery.

4. What happens next?

Could a recovery lead into another bull market?

Hypothetical historical-shape illustration, with recovery near $80,000 and a Bull Market? label spanning the period afterwards. Not a forecast.

This hypothetical illustration reuses the shape of the 2023 to 2024 chart, with the recovery placed around $80,000. It is not a forecast or expected outcome. Future prices could follow a very different path, including falling.

Whatever happens next, you want to know what you’re buying, how much you’re prepared to invest and when you’ll take profits.

Bitstamp daily BTC/USD closes. “Bottom” labels the low consolidation area in each displayed window, not a confirmed final cycle low. Different dollar scales are labelled. Historical patterns do not establish today’s cycle stage or guarantee another bull run.

The reason to study this now is simple.

If the market starts moving quickly, you don’t want your first job to be figuring out what any of these investments do.

You want to have researched the coins you’re interested in, decided how much you could invest and worked out when you’d take some money off the table.

Otherwise, you end up doing what you did last time: watching the price, waiting for someone else to tell you it’s a good buy, and feeling comfortable only after it’s already gone up.

Here’s what you want worked out for your portfolio.

  1. How much do I want in Bitcoin, other established coins and smaller investments?
  2. How could I earn passive yield on my idle capital, and what risks would I be taking?
  3. Which early-stage coins should I research before putting money into them?
  4. How much cash do I want available for new opportunities?
  5. When will I take profits, and how much will I sell?

Once you’ve worked through that, you can make a decision about your whole portfolio.

You can see where you want to add money, what needs more research and what you don’t want to own.

The difficulty is finding someone credible to teach you how to do it.

WHO DO YOU LEARN THIS FROM?

You shouldn’t have to build your portfolio from YouTube tips.

With property or stocks, you can speak to a specialist and work from research you understand.

You expect a proper explanation before putting your money in.

With crypto, you can spend ten hours watching videos and come away with ten different opinions.

You don’t know who has looked into the investment properly, who is being paid to promote it or who bought months before telling you about it.

That’s something I wanted to change with Collective Shift.

I’m Ben Simpson. I’ve spent nine years investing in digital assets, through multiple market cycles.

Our team researches these investments for a living.
